Case studies: Special educational needs

Ashley has a tantrum & leaves  class without permission

Module 7

The aims of this unit are:

  1. To raise an awareness of the acute difficulties some pupils have in class.
  2. To introduce a range of Wave 3 strategies, which would allow Ashley to recover his behaviour after a temper tantrum.
  3. To help you to plan ahead and to reflect on the best way to deal with the incident next time.

Ashley has a Statement of Special Educational Needs, for significant anger management concerns. His progress is monitored by the school SENDCo, and he has a Teacher Assistant working with him work in class for 5 mornings a week.

Although there were positive comments from his Teacher Assistant for lessons during the morning, Ashley was in a fractious mood after dinner time break. He did not respond positively in registration, but became more and more agitated.

Within minutes, he had scattered his apparatus, ripped up his written work, tipped over 2 or 3 chairs and stormed out of class. He disappeared along the corridor and out of sight.
