Sharpening your skills

Additional strategies which might help to raise Prince’s self esteem and confidence levels

  • Reflect on which approaches to teaching (eg visual, auditory or kinaesthetic) are most successful for Prince
  • Re-read Prince’s Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.)
  • Speak with Prince’s Tutor/SENDCo to identify/review his specific educational/behavioural needs
  • Prepare easy to achieve work which focuses on small steps of achievement and progress
  • Keep under review, realistically, how much work is acceptable for Prince to do in each lesson
  • Photo-copy samples of work to help Prince to visualise what his work could look like
  • Start building his confidence levels with adults by giving him a degree of support
  • Use a Teacher Assistant to work with Prince to support his written work
  • Script his writing in the early stages to pattern his sentence work
  • Be prepared to produce spelling or other basic check lists which Prince can learn to use
  • Use easy to follow writing frames or cloze exercises
  • Use lots of praise for small steps or improvements
  • Consider using a story board, with annotated comments
  • Talk to adults, who know him, and think of ways to raise his self esteem
  • Ask him to do specific classroom tasks to increase his levels of responsibility
  • Increase his sense of belonging
  • Encourage other pupils to work alongside him (as a positive opportunity for them too)
  • Build in short term rewards eg. erase Timed Consequences from B.R.Board when on task
  • Work hard to build a trusting relationship with Prince while being aware that this may take time
  • As much as possible, regard each day as a new opportunity to encourage him
