Case studies: Medium level behaviours
Mason defies the teacher’s authority
The aims of this unit are:
- To use a set of Wave 3 : Specific 1 to 1 : Zero Tolerance strategies to manage Mason’s manipulative behaviour.
- To highlight that individual pupils need recognition and praise for small step improvements in attitude and behaviour.
- To introduce a practical method of monitoring inappropriate behaviours.
Although Mason is an intelligent boy, he always appears to be ‘off task’, talking or fidgeting with something to gain attention. When spoken to, he becomes the ‘clever clogs’ of the class. Mason questions the teacher’s decisions and attempts to undermine the teacher’s authority with his comments, seeking approval from his peers.
He then tries to manipulate the flow and the mood of the lesson, with a knowing smirk on his face. These behaviours are more noticeable at the beginning of lessons, when he knows the teacher is focusing on the lesson content and giving out lots of instructions and information.
