Sharpening your skills

To resolve issues of loud and uncooperative behaviours it will be important for you to

  • Keep cool, stay calm and control your emotions

Interview Troy before next lesson. Be quietly encouraging, mention any positives

  • Ask Troy to outline what he thinks is going wrong in class
  • Make him aware that you are trying to understand his feelings at present
  • Make it clear it’s the behaviour that is the concern, not the pupil
  • Reinforce that there is no place for shouting at adults in class
  • Offer Troy the opportunity to talk to someone of his choosing eg. a teacher he respects is always a good option
  • Focus on the primary behaviour that is most of concern. Target one thing at a time

Introduce a Behaviour Target Sheet for next lesson

  • Make a point of Meeting and Greeting him
  • Assess his mood and reactions
  • Remind Troy about having a good lesson and what your expectations are
  • Do not over react to any uncharacteristic behaviours
  • Ignore the diversion tactics, eg. the couldn’t care attitude; the face pulls, the shrugging shoulders
  • Continue to deal with the inappropriate behaviours in class by sticking to your classroom behaviour plan
  • Use non-verbal communication eg. point to the specific concern on the list of classroom rules

Introduce 5 minute Time Out card. This card opens up a set of different choices for Troy

  • Refer to the school policy on use of School Sanctions and apply one of these next lesson, if necessary
  • Apply a School Sanction for all aggressive behaviours in your lesson
  • Do not jump in too quickly with the detention but hold fire, stay detached
  • Give a Formal Detention at end of lesson. However, do send for Form Tutor or Senior Teacher for assistance if necessary
  • Be specific, state the facts and look for positives next lesson
