What do I need to know about Behaviour Management

Module 1

Classroom Management

These behaviours are a sample from McNamara’s Positive Behaviour Management checklist and will help you monitor behaviour in your own classroom:

Academic behaviour

  • Follows written and verbal instructions
  • Settles to work and task completion

In-seat and out of seat behaviours

  • Turns and rocks in seat; fidgeting and shuffling in seat
  • Moves from seat and walks about; runs around classroom

Rules and routines behaviours

  • Follows rules; works quietly, talks politely; listens attentively
  • Follows routines: Entering and leaving classroom, Distributes equipment and materials

Verbal and noisy behaviours

  • Calls out and shouts out to teacher and/or pupil
  • Moves furniture. Inappropriate comments to teacher. Makes non verbal noises

Aggression towards pupils

  • Pushes, trips, strikes and /or kicks other pupils. Scratches, pinches, bites other pupils
  • Physically/verbally threatens pupils

Aggression towards teachers

  • Argues with teachers, gives cheek, gestures, hits out
  • Throws books and equipment, uses offensive language

Social and emotional behaviours

  • Often worried; disliked by other pupils, irritable
  • Loses temper easily; passive, unhappy; tearful, anxious
